Nowadays small distributed energy is actively developing on the basis of piston, gas and steam turbine engines. In particular, a number of factories for the production of small-sized gas turbine and piston power plants operate and are being built in Russia. There is a huge market for heat engines of automobile, air, water and rail transport. In the near future, a sharp increase in vehicles with hybrid power plants, including piston and gas turbine engines, is expected.
Students on an educational program in a master's program work on a developed laboratory base, with modern programs to perform the most complex tasks of calculating and designing heat engines and boost units. The laboratories are equipped with equipment for rapid prototyping and implementation of any ideas of the project participant. There are stands for testing thermal engines, as well as non-motorized stands for researching boost units. The level of equipment and software used corresponds to modern development trends in the field of engine building, and includes most of the most advanced design and research technologies. To obtain knowledge in close cooperation with production, a basic department was created at ZAO Turbotehnika NPO (Protvino MO).
Graduates manage scientific centers and enterprises of the engineering and energy industries, carry out research work of any complexity in the field of small energy, work in research institutes and in the factories of the engine industry, engaged in the development of new and modernization of existing models of power plants for transport and small power engineering; in the field of operation of thermal power plants, microturbine power units, and special wheeled and tracked vehicles, in the field of control of small power units that supply energy to individual villages and small towns, electric generators; in service centers for maintenance, repair and design of turbocompressors, tractors, high-speed tracked vehicles, special wheeled and tracked vehicles; in commercial organizations involved in the design and implementation of components of power plants and units of microturbines and many other structures.
This is a completely new educational program created with the direct participation of experts from the energy and engine industries. It fully reflects current trends in the development of small energy and power units for transport. There is an extensive base of internships at partner enterprises from the power engineering and engine building industries. Master's thesis works are carried out on real topics provided by partner enterprises of the educational program, and reflecting all modern trends in the field of power engineering.

The course aimed at creating a project for a real customer. Students conduct a project from scratch, develop it using various devices, software products and technologies. Each project has its own curator who sets tasks and helps to solve the problems that have arisen.
Thanks to project activities, students are interested in working for results and each graduate has a portfolio of completed projects - a kind of CV that guarantees the employer that he really mastered what is recorded in the curriculum.
